I moved out of my old apartment in jacksonville, fl by breaking the lease.. the apartment company told me that i am responsible for the remainder of the lease until july. Now that i moved out they hiked the rent up to $1100 dollers and are charging a $300 application fee. Before i moved out they told me the price would be $940 with a $200 application fee if someone wanted it. Are they allowed to raise the price like that? or are they trying to screw me over?
Answer
You are only responsible for the months that the property is not rented. And only on the amount that your lease stated.

Hello: I just read your question. To provide an accurate answer I would need to see the lease to review any default & penalty provision. I don't believe they can change the amount of the rent however. If my office can be of assistance, pls. contact us. While most lawyers would need a retainer up front, Fla. law provides prevailing party can win their fees and costs back from the losing side...this puts pressure on the side with the weakest case to avoids a trial. Good luck. Tom Rosenblum
