At the least, you get taxed when you buy it new and you get taxed for the fuel you put in it.
In the UK you pay an annual road tax, called a 'road fund licence'. The tax disc is displayed in the windscreen, to prove that you have paid. If it's out of date or missing, your car gets towed and crushed, if you don't pay the recovery fee and tax.
