American Airlines refuses to give refund for double paid ticket, due to mistake on their own. Requested refund, they rejected with vague template style answer. What can be done?

If AA will not yield, a letter to them stating that you will file a small claims
lawsuit may get results. Whether you later file a lawsuit will depend on your
evaluations of the costs and benefits.
