How do you reset the timing whenyou are putting backin the timing belt?

How do you reset the timing whenyou are putting backin the timing belt?
First, there are two "timing issues", 1) engine timing (relationship between camshaft and crankshaft) and 2) ignition timing.

1) Engine Timing - First place all cylinders so that they are midway between TDC and BDC (mid-stroke). Then rotate the camshaft until the valves on Cylinder #1 are on overlap. That is when both the intake and exhaust are open by equal amounts. You should find that the mark on the camshaft pulley now aligns with a mark on the head. (Check manual for where that mark is located)

Now bring the crankshaft to TDC align the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley with the mark on the front of the engine.

Retract the timing belt tensioner and lock. Now put the belt on the crank and cam pulleys, keeping it tight, and THEN put it around the belt tensioner. Then, without letting the belt slip a tooth on the cam and crank pulleys, release the belt tensioner. Turn the engine over BY HAND 1-2 times and now LOCK down the belt tensioner.

2) Ignition timing. Read in you maintenance manual how to reset ignition for your particular time. In general you want the coil to fire the cylinder at some number of degrees before TDC on the compression stroke. Remember that each combustion cycle is actually 720 degrees. Half of this is the intake phase (when the valves are equally open at TDC) and the other half is the power phase (both valves closed and the piston compressing the intake charge).
