Question

I recently had a doctor's appointment and found out today that the secretary that registered my personal information released some info to an inmate (boyfriend) that is in custody at the jail I work at. This inmate admitted that his girlfriend told him I was at that doctor's office. I am a correctional officer and this is unethical and a safety concern. What can I do?

Answer

First, complain to the doctor about the matter.

Second, discuss the matter with an attorney in a law office visit or telephone conference.

You should have several claims against the secretary and doctor's office, including a claim for invasion of privacy.

If you need additional information about your rights, please contact me. I have handled similar cases.

Answer

Besides general privacy concerns, federal law (HIPPA ) has very strict rules on the release of personal health information and very serious penalties for violations. Though not every provider falls under HIPAA most do.
