Why doesn't your 4 wheel drive indicator light stay on in your 2007 Toyota RAV4?

Why doesn't your 4 wheel drive indicator light stay on in your 2007 Toyota RAV4?
Either the sensor is bad or the shift motor in/on the transfer case is not working for some reason (failed, blown fuse. etc.)
